Itinerary

DAY 1: WATUMALANDONG BEACH – TANJUNG MAREHA – BAWANNA BEACH SUNSET

Welcome to Tambolaka!

The starting point of our Best of Sumba tour. Upon arrival at the airport, meet and greet with your guide, and we will begin the journey. Enjoy an authentic meal at a local restaurant, before heading to Watumalandong Beach, a white-sand beach dotted with five big rocks. Then, proceed to the beach of Bwanna. It is situated on the foothills of majestic cliffs that open up to the Indian Ocean. While its beauty is unquestionable, the beach is still unknown by most tourists, making it secluded and clean. Relax to the sound of the waves and the sight of the setting sun, the perfect end to your first day. Head back to the hotel for dinner.

Note: Ensure your beach bag is ready to go, with a towel and extra clothes, as we might head to the beach directly from the airport.

DAY 2: MARKET & SCHOOL VISIT – RATENGGARO VILLAGE & BEACH – WAINYAPU VILLAGE

After an early breakfast, head to South West Sumba to explore a traditional market. Spend some time perusing the local artefacts. Shortly after, you will get to visit one of the senior high schools in the region, where the students will welcome you with a traditional dance performance. Enjoy a cup of coffee, snacks, and a chance to interact with the kids. This experience will definitely leave an imprint on your heart! Next, drive down to Ratenggaro Village in the Kodi area. Here, you will get to see the traditional high rooftops houses (the highest rooftops in all of Sumba) built by hand. While some of the houses are essentially compounds, each can safely accommodate up to 50 family members. This village is one of a few traditional villages left in the area. During the harvest season, you will find most of the villagers working in the fields, with only the elders and children left behind. Your next stop will be at Wainyapu Village, to enjoy the vibrant and bold Pasola Festival, held every year in Sumba. Enjoy tea and coffee with the locals, followed by lending them a helping hand in the kitchen. Cook a delicious dinner and savour it in the company of friendly village folk. Head back to the hotel for an overnight stay.

DAY 3: DAILY ACTIVITIES IN TODA VILLAGE – WEEKURI LAKE – MANDORAK BEACH SUNSET

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before your daily sojourn begins. Head to Toda Village for a peek into the lives of the Sumbanese people. Observe them as they go about their daily activities such as cutting grass and feeding it to the horses, cows and pigs. You can even enjoy a horse ride with one of the locals, as well as witness the art of Sumba boxing. After lunch, continue to Weekuri Lake – a crystal-clear lake that invites you to take a dip and relax by its balmy shores. Swim in blue-green waters, explore the gorgeous rocks and reef, and catch sight of the ocean on the other side. Next to Weekuri Lake, you will discover Mandorak Beach, nestled between two huge rock ridges. Spend some time at this secret beach that opens up to the sparkling blue ocean. Savour fresh coconut water while watching the sun go down. Head back to the hotel for dinner.

DAY 4: WAIKELO RICEFIELD – PRAIJING VILLAGE – LAPOPU WATERFALL – WAIGALI & PRAIGOLI VILLAGE

You are officially halfway through your Best of Sumba Tour!

After a wholesome breakfast, head to Waikelo, where you will get to trek through the rice fields and discover a water cave. The chances of spotting a local over here is big! In fact, you might just find them bathing or washing their clothes in the river. Next, head to Praijing, yet another charming village in Sumba. The locals here are friendly, especially the kids, so you can try to communicate with them. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to observe them preparing food or weaving the Ikat. If they are okay with it, you can ask them to teach you how to make one. Climb to the view point to enjoy the panorama of the whole village. The endless hills… a definite highlight. Enjoy a drive through the endless hilly green landscapes of Sumba, where you will have to continue the journey on foot. To visit the waterfall, you will need to hike for approximately 15 minutes, crossing a bamboo bridge to get there. There is a nice spot to perch upon while watching the water trickling down the hill. Your next stop includes a visit to Praigoli Village to see the Kajiwa Stone and Pasola Field. And not far from Praigoli village, you will discover Waigali Village perched on top of a hill. Make sure to gaze at the Andung (Scull Tree). Head back to the hotel for some much-needed rest and recouperation.
