Itinerary
DAY 1: RATENGGARO VILLAGE – WAINYAPU VILLAGE – PERO BEACH SUNSET
Upon arrival at the airport of Tambolaka, meet and greet with your guide, and we will begin the journey. Enjoy an authentic meal at a local restaurant, before heading to the quaint village of Ratenggaro in the Kodi area. Here, you will get to see the traditional high rooftops houses (the highest rooftops in all of Sumba) built by hand. While some of the houses are essentially compounds, each can safely accommodate up to 50 family members. This village is one of a few traditional villages left in the area. During the harvest season, you will find most of the villagers working in the fields, with only the elders and children left behind. Next, make your way to the Pasola Lamboya Field, to enjoy a unique local festival that is held every year in Sumba. End your day on Pero beach, basking in a spectacular sunset.
DAY 2: DAILY ACTIVITIES IN TODA VILLAGE – LAPOPU WATERFALL – PRAIJING VILLAGE
Savour your breakfast, before heading to Toda Village for a peek into the lives of the Sumbanese people. Observe them as they go about their daily activities such as cutting grass and feeding it to the horses, cows and pigs. You can even enjoy a horse ride with one of the locals, as well as witness the art of Sumba boxing. In the late afternoon, we will continue our trip to West Sumba, and visit Lapopu Waterfall. Enjoy a drive through the endless hilly green landscapes of Sumba, where you will have to continue the journey on foot. To visit the waterfall, you will need to hike for approximately 15 minutes, crossing a bamboo bridge to get there. There is a nice spot to perch upon while watching the water trickling down the hill. Our trip continues to the village of Praijing, a traditional commune nestled in the hills, surrounded by shrubs of greenery. This is one of the few villages that takes you through its inner workings, giving you a taste of the local culture. Take some time to walk around the village; the elders occupy most of the houses, some of them weaving the ikat (Sumbanese cloth) right before your eyes. You can learn the craft or simply observe. Don’t forget to share candies with the village children, after all, they’re so generous with their smiles!
Day 3: WAIGALI & PRAIGOLI VILLAGE – GALUBAKUL VILLAGE – WAIRINDING HILL SUNSET
Enjoy breakfast and then proceed to check out from the hotel. The first half of your day will entail visiting idyllic villages in West Sumba. First to Praigoli Village, to see the Kajiwa Stone and Pasola Field. And not far from Praigoli village, you will discover Waigali Village perched on top of a hill. Make sure to gaze at the Andung (Scull Tree). Next, we will go to Galubakul Village, where you can marvel at Sumba’s largest tomb. Our trip continues to East Sumba, but first, a stop at Wairinding Hill to witness the sunset.
DAY 4: NATURAL DYE TRADITIONAL TEXTILE WORKSHOP – WALAKIRI BEACH SUNSET
After a scrumptious breakfast, head to a local village, where you can learn about Tenun Ikat, the traditional cloth of Sumba. Ikat is a technique of reserve dyeing, where bundles of yarn are tightly wrapped together and dyed as many times as is required to create a pattern. The pattern is influenced by human, animal, and supernatural motifs. What makes this process unique is the fact that the threads are coloured even before being woven into a piece of cloth! Observe the process, and try your hand at it. Come late afternoon, head to Walakiri Beach to explore the beautiful mangroves. Don’t hesitate to walk towards the small, magical trees growing within the water. End the day by taking in the gorgeous sunset.
DAY 5: SUNRISE TREKKING TENAU HILL – OUT WAINGAPU AIRPORT
Your wake-up call will be early, but well worth it, as you get to welcome the sunrise at Tenau Hill! Trek through the lush-green landscapes to find the perfect spot for relaxation. Later, head back to the hotel for a sumptuous breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, the driver will pick you up and escort you to Waingapu Airport.
